Zelos is, in short, a very attractive man: He has long, wavy red hair
and bright blue eyes, his face is oval with fine, well-balanced
features. His skin is fair. He is slender but strong in build, being a
swordsman, and of above-average height. He carries himself in a
confident and friendly manner, His default costume is a black tanktop
underneath a sleeveless pink duster, fastened across his chest by
wooden toggles. He wears pink-and-black gloves up to his armpits as
well, matching his shirt and duster. His pants are loose, white, and
belted, and his shoes are also white with golden trim. He has a red
crystal implanted over his collarbone; the Cruxis Crystal. It is
almost unremovable.
Personality:
Zelos At A Glance:
Extremely vain, in love with himself, confident, flirtatious to a
fault, shallow, promiscuous, selfish, unsympathetic, arrogant, not too
bright, oversexed, and something of a jerk.
This personality is mostly a construction to hide his cynicism about
the world and alarmingly low self-esteem, caused by severe neglect in
his childhood. The real Zelos clowns around to hide his depression
with his life in Tethe'alla. However, the burdens of Chosen were
lifted from him at end of the first game, so he can finally begin
living the sort of fun, easy life he'd always wanted. He is, deep
down, kinder than he looks, caring deeply for his sister and using his
position to alleviate the suffering of the persecuted half-elves.
Zelos, though he hides it sometimes, can read people well and charm
them easily. He tends to be frank and honest. He's very intelligent,
being a triple-agent in the first game. For all intents and purposes,
though, he will continue to maintain the "happy" personality unless
forced out of it, either by catastrophe or an...opportunity (I did
tell you he was a triple agent).
Abilities: (For superhuman powers/strength/abilities, describe
how they will be limited)
He's a clever swordsman, basically. Zelos isn't as godlike as some
swordsmen, so he should not be limited much here--no high-end techs or
magic, but he was never very reliant on them in any case. He's clever
and can read and understand people, as well as charm them--especially
if they're of the opposite sex. Also, Zelos is very talented at
mathematics.
Weaknesses:
His personality can. ...well, it's either love or hate. It's easy for
him to grate on a lot of people--by ignoring them, if they're male, or
by paying too much attention to them, if they're female. Zelos is
clever, but not a genius--he can be outsmarted. Lastly, he is simply
not that amazingly strong and such will probably need help taking care
of larger groups of crabs or the more dangerous residents of
Manhattan.
Manhattanite or outsider? OUTSIDERRRRRRR
History:
Zelos was born as the Chosen in the land of Tethe’alla. Tethe’alla and
its twin Sylvarant are worlds in opposition; when one waxes the other
wanes. The Chosen is the one destined to restore order, if the world
is waning—however, Tethe’alla has been waxing for almost a thousand
years, and the position of Chosen has become ceremonial. This is
important to understand the events that transpired in his childhood.
He was the product of a marriage arranged by the Oracle of Cruxis,
necessary to produce the Chosen, his mother in love with another man
and his father already having an affair with another woman—a half elf,
and the mother of Zelos’ younger sibling, Seles. His father died when
he was a child, and his half-elf mistress attempted to kill Zelos,
trying to get favor for her child as his heir. It failed, clearly, but
she did manage to kill his mother in the crossfire, her last words to
Zelos being “I wish you were never born.” Ahh, family life. It fucks
you up.
As a result of this and continued neglect through his childhood, he
grew up hating himself, blaming himself for all the bad things that
had happened to his family. However he was apparently popular with
everyone—however again, he’s a clever lad, so it didn’t take him long
to figure out that what they were infatuated with was his position,
money, and influence. This didn’t help his already multiplicitous
issues in the slightest, in the end driving him to adopt his outer
playboy mask, hiding disdain for all of high society: If they want to
use him, let them. He’ll use them all in return.
This lasted until his twenty second year, when he discovered that the
Chosen from Sylvarant had somehow crossed over…and that the true
meaning behind the idea of “world regeneration” was far more complex
and sinister than anyone had imagined. Of course, to Zelos this was an
opportunity: He could use himself, his status, as a bargaining chip
with the three sides acting on each other, bribing them all with
either charm or the incredibly valuable Cruxis Crystal embedded in his
chest. He successfully played all three sides against each other,
apparently betraying the main party…but that was apparently an
illusion, as it seems that the messiah-like hero Lloyd had apparently
gotten to him some. Indeed, it was Zelos’s gambit that makes it
possibly for them all to win in the end, and restore the worlds to
what they ought to be. Cue the end of the first game.
Of course, nothing is that simple, and if you’ve got a franchise, why
not milk it? Cue the sequel!
His role in this game is actually greatly reduced—all we know is that
since world regeneration is no longer necessary, he isn’t a Chosen
anymore…which he finds tremendously convenient, since the money and
everything is all still there, leaving him capable of living a fun,
easy life. He initially gets off on the wrong foot with the new
protagonists, but after the various misunderstandings are resolved, he
proves to be an adept and loyal ally, journeying with them to the end
of all things in the Ginunngagap…where he promptly got turned to
stone. Oops.
Who knows what happened to the consciousness of the others while Emil
and Marta went to free them from the effects of the curse, but Zelos
went to a strange place called “Manhattan.”
